With Their Degree In Technology Skills Accredited Distance Learning Degree Program Grads Will Find Exciting Careers Abound
While many teenagers were hitting the beach this summer, a group of high school sophomores and juniors were scheduled to begin sampling local swimming waters for bacteria. The teenagers were participating in a six week internship program at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. They were also to explore how tiny gene therapy particles that are part of nanotechnology can make their way to tumors inside the body and shut down cancer genes.
At Boston University, a separate group of high school seniors also participated in a six week research program. Since its 1978 inception, Boston University’s Research Internship in Science and Engineering Program has welcomed more than 500 teenagers. One of them, Neel Hajare, in 2007 designed, programmed and built a CAT (Computerized Axial Tomography) scanning robot with Legos, motors, software programs, lasers, and knitting needles.
“Intellectually stimulating” is how Hajare described the experience on the Research Internship in Science and Engineering Program. It was like nothing he had done in school. He’d had to figure out how to do something, had to improvise, he said. Hajare seemed pleasantly surprised by his success with the project.
In addition to offering opportunities to pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines, colleges and universities throughout the country offer innovative programs with the goal of getting pre-college students like Hajare excited about the subjects. The students get to see first hand the diverse potential these subject areas have to offer. Agencies and organizations are also partnering to offer progressive STEM programs and services, in part since President Barack Obama Administration launched an “Educate to Innovate” campaign.
Science, technology, engineering and math degrees come in a variety of specialties and can lead to careers that are expected to see some of the fastest employment growth. Students who major in subjects such as science, technology, engineering and math might work with hospitals and healthcare agencies and organizations on computer technologies that can improve efficiency and patient care. They might otherwise work on ways to help secure drinking water supplies or to prevent beaches from eroding in storms and rising seas.
President Barack Obama is among those who have emphasized that STEM careers can help the United remain a leader in the areas of innovation and technology. The National Science Board earlier this year issued a report showing that the number of bachelor’s degrees in the United States, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom has remained relatively flat. Those in China, on the other hand, have increased sharply since 2002, according to the report.
Some of today’s STEM programs are intended for populations in society that have not had the same exposure in science, technology, engineering and math as some of the larger groups. Northeastern University’s “Connections” program, for example, is for female middle and high school students and, at the middle school level, allows students and Girl Scout troops to explore bugs and plants with a microscope, learn how to program a robot using Lego’s Mindstorms software and gain hands-on education in engineering and science by building things. There are also programs for K-12 students and teachers, those who have the ability to capture and keep the interest of students. Through Boston University’s Project STAMP, for instance, graduate and undergraduate science, engineering, technology and math majors work with area K-12 teachers to develop curricula for their classes.
By reaching out to students and teachers at younger grade levels, both traditional and online college programs that offer science, engineering, technology and math degrees are part of what some call a “pipeline” for future STEM degree candidates and professionals. These candidates, once they obtain their information technology degree, can enter careers that many feel are important to the country’s, even the world’s, future. More importantly, science, engineering, technology and math degree recipients who enter STEM-related fields might find their work exciting, rewarding and a service to the population as a whole.
